Sustainable events at the Sydney Festival

We recently gave a little tid bit of an insight into what the Sydney Festival is doing to green itself and become more sustainable. As part of their sustainbliity program, the below two events are on – take a look and get along!

_________

Can Consumption Become Sustainable?  A panel discussion partner event by the Sydney Festival and Unilever with international and domestic panellists.

What:  Billions of people around the world aspire to a better quality of life and to enjoy everyday products such as soap, shampoo and tea.  But can we really consume more without going beyond the earth’s natural limits?  The same question can be posed to events, major celebrations and general life in the city, which use large quantities of resources in power, transport and infrastructure.

Who: The discussion will be chaired by broadcaster, author and comedian Adam Spencer, with panellists:

Dr Val Curtis, Director, Hygiene Centre, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine
Jon Dee, Founder and Managing Director, Do Something! and 2010 NSW Australian of the Year
Ingrid Just, Spokesperson/Head of Media, CHOICE
Gavin Neath, Senior Vice President, Global Communications and Sustainability, Unilever

The event follows Unilever’s global sustainability debate series across London, Rotterdam, Delhi and New York.

When/Where/How: This event is free, however registration is essential. Please see if tickets are still available here. Otherwise Sustahood may have a few spares.

At the City Recital Hall, Tuesday 24th Jan 2012, 6:30pm. .

Sustainable Garden – Parramatta

What: Local artists descend upon Parramatta and transform Connection Arcade into an immersive world of vivid flowers, raucous plants and unexpected structures made from re-used and recycled materials.

With your help, the installation will literally ‘grow’ across a ten day period. Bring us your unwanted Christmas wrapping, plastic bags and bottles, and watch them grow in our organic wonderland. Watch as the atrium evolves into a greenhouse, with sun streaming through and vegetation spilling out into the Mall.

Get involved in a daily craft workshop, and under the guidance of the artists, make flowers, vines and other items to include in this living, breathing artwork within a vibrant garden environment.

Who: Featuring local artists:
